Why the Greenhouse Motif? A Short History of Horticulture in Brighton Local historian Dr. William P. Marchione will present a PowerPoint presentation on the history of horticulture in Brighton, tracing the development of the profession from the country estates maintained by the town’s renowned “cultivating gentlemen” like Gorham Parsons and Samuel Wyllys Pomeroy; to the choice of Brighton as the headquarters of Massachusetts earliest state fairs; to the establishment in 1820 by Captain Jonathan Winship of the town’s first nursery; to the fascinating gallery of horticultural innovators that made 19th century Brighton arguably the leading Boston-area center of that profession. This will be followed by a reception in the Heritage Museum honoring the unique contributions that the Brighton-Allston Garden Club & Horticultural Society has made to our community over the last decade. |

Tenth Annual Hidden Garden Tour of Brighton-Allston Join us and the Brighton Garden & Horticultural Society in what has become one of the neighborhood’s most popular traditions, the annual self-guided garden tour. Many of Brighton’s gardens are at their best in the early summer, and this year the event will feature 10-12 gardens of varying designs and sizes in the Faneuil section of Brighton, along with a few gardens in other nearby areas. It promises to once again showcase the beauty that exists throughout the neighborhood. A later Spring mailing will provide more details about things such as cost, but mark your calendars now so that you can be sure not to miss this event! |
